Permit me to use this medium to highlight Carolyn Cooper’s ignorance based on her article “KC old boys desire male sex” published in this Sunday’s Gleaner. As a past student of the Bishop Gibson High School for Girls (a sister school to Kingston College) I, like my KC brothers was insulted after reading her distasteful article. For Cooper to assume that former students of Kingston College are gay simply exudes her level of ignorance.
If a school operates as single-sex, their Past Students Association has all right to exclude members of the opposite sex from their events. After all, the purpose of these events is to bond with peers and reminisce on good old school days without interference from the opposite sex. There’s a time and place for everything; a time for spouses and a time for friends.
The decision made by the Kingston College Old Boys’ Association to exclude females from their event should be respected for what it is and not construed as them being gay. There is no concrete evidence to justify that attending a single-sex institution or being in the company of the same sex for an extended period results in one being gay. In light of this, I think Cooper owes the Kingston College Old Boys Association an apology.
I’m appalled that an educated person of her calibre has made such a biased and judgmental statement. I honestly expected this sentiment from an uneducated man, not a university professor who holds a PhD. As an educated person, I would expect her to put her intellect to better use rather than waste media space to highlight a trivial issue which wasn’t amusing. Sorry Cooper but that article was a failed attempt at satire, shame on you!
Nevertheless, students from schools founded by the Rt. Reverend Percival Bishop Gibson are groomed and cultured to endure such adversities. We will continue to raise the Fortis flag high and watch the weak make fools of themselves in their quest to demean and diminish us. The brave may fall but never yield: Forever Fortis!
