In Poverty with 3 Children

Its Saturday and I’m in town doing my weekly grocery shopping; after making my rounds at the market and supermarket, I suddenly remember that I was out of vitamins & iron tablets. So I rush into a popular pharmacy, place my order and proceed to pay the cashier. As soon I open my purse and hand the cashier my card, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to face a tall, obese woman with a child by her side, one in hand and another on the way.
“How may I assist u maam”? “Please mi a beg yuh mek up dis soh mi can buy a cough syrup fi mi son” she said, stretching her hand to show me $150.
I looked at the child, poor soul looked so malnourished and it appeared as if he hadn’t eaten since daybreak. With the sympathetic heart that I have, I asked the cashier to add the cough syrup to my bill and told the mother to use the money she had to get something for the child to eat. Honestly, I pitied the child but definitely not his mother. I don’t know if I’m silly or what but there’s no way I could be in a financial crisis & allow a man to impregnate me not once, not twice but all of THREE times. Is it that public clinics have stop issuing free contraceptives for people who can’t afford those over the counter?
Before handing her the paper bag I was curious to know what had happened to the father of her children. “Miss where’s their father”? “None a dem nah give mi nothing fi dem bra”. By then I surmised that all 3 children were for different men. Sigh! I handed her the bag: “God bless yuh maam” “No problem but after this child, tie your tubes” She laughed, “mi plan fi do dat yes”
I understand that situations cause persons to end up in certain dilemmas but some things can be prevented. In other words, ladies if yuh breed once and yuh struggling wid di one pickney, protect yuhself an’ doah breed a second time. Some mistakes must only be made once.
I exit the pharmacy thinking of the title for Saturday’s first blog post.
