Lisa Hanna in Swimwear, So What?

A few days ago Minister of Youth & Culture, Lisa Hanna posted on Instagram (IG) a pic of herself at the beach in a bikini & T-shirt. Much to my surprise, most Jamaicans were appalled by this and naturally all social media sites went haywire!

Why though? Isn’t Lisa a normal human being? Was she expected to wear business attire to the beach? What if it was Portia that posed in a bikini?

I was annoyed by the vapid newspaper headline seeking the public’s opinion as to whether or not it was appropriate for her to wear swimwear to the beach and post a picture of herself in it. Of all the things happening in this country, Lisa Hanna’s swimsuit pic was the most newsworthy piece of information to hit the front page?

Many are saying that it is not the picture that is inappropriate but the posting of it. In my estimation, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference if someone else posted it as the picture would still be there for ‘John Public’ to see. Posting of pictures to social media is something ordinary people do everyday. I don’t believe Lisa should be viewed differently from any other person that uses social media.

You narrow-minded individuals need to understand that politicians do have a life outside of serving the people of this country. They all have a right to personal time and space to have fun. Fun for Lisa may be going to the beach, posing for a pic and then posting it to her IG page.

Its not the first she has paraded her well toned figure in a swimsuit and it definitely won’t be the last. Keep in mind the woman was a former Miss World & during her reign she wore bikinis and posed for many photos. Currently, she leads a very active social life as indicated by her Instagram page so you can all brace yourselves for more (daring) photos.

Many of us Jamaicans are too taken up with trivial issues instead of focusing on more pressing problems, I honestly believe that we need to stop majoring in the minor. We need to face the present reality, the world is revolving and social media is becoming increasingly popular. Unfortunately many of us are stuck in a time warp from a bygone era and we need to get out of it.
