MOE Concerned About NCU Issue: Student Threatens to File Lawsuit Against Institution

The Education Ministry says it is now concerned about the situation unfolding at the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) involving the suspension of a student for her role in a cheerleading routine.

Twenty-one-year-old Sha-Shana James was suspended for two weeks has been banned from all student activities for the remaining two years she has at the university because of the performance of an unapproved routine at a March 4 sports event.

In the routine, James acting as a cake topper, kissed the hand of another cheerleader.

She has accused the university of discrimination.

The Mandeville-based university denies any discrimination and insists that while the entire team was disqualified, greater punishment was given to James because she was responsible for the performance of the unapproved routine.

The education minister says he has not been briefed by the student or the university but notes that there is a danger in being too lax or too rigorous.

Thwaites says the Ministry has not decided whether to intervene but explains that the Ministry is prepared to respond if contacted by the student or NCU.

Attorney-at-Law, Clyde Williams has described NCU’s actions as excessive and unfair, given that no other member of the team was suspended.

Meanwhile, James says NCU’s administration has invited her to a meeting on Thursday.

James says she has retained a lawyer and is considering bringing a lawsuit against NCU for discrimination and defamation of character.
