Mrs & Sweetheart: Things to Know

Some months ago I analyzed the roles of wives vs. side chicks o/c ‘matey’ in Jamaican terms. This post is an extension to the issue as I have come to realize that ‘mateys’ are flying off their nests and weaving their way deeply into the lives of committed men.

The story was once told of a college student who got into a relationship with her lecturer knowing that he was married. Thinking that she now ‘owned’ the man, the young woman who wasn’t content with just being with the man on base, befriended the man’s wife on Facebook, commented on her photos & pried into the couple’s life. And I need not expound to tell you what happened when the man’s wife got word of the affair.

According to some men, good men are scarce and more women exists than men justifying their argument that they have to double up to ensure that all women are properly served in the love department. And in reality, some women will get chosen as the wife and unfortunately some will have to settle as sweetheart.

Some women have accepted this, while some, even after accepting their status as sweethearts, aren’t cognizant of their roles. As a result, confrontations between them and the wives arise. Side chicks, I’ve told you before and I’m going to tell you again. As the other woman:

1. You shouldn’t call when you know he’s home.

2. Don’t inquire about his wife.

3. Never disrespect the ‘Mrs’….there’s a reason she’s wearing the ring & you aren’t.

4. Accept the fact that more quality time is spent with ‘Mrs’ so if you can’t deal with that, find an unmarried man.

5. Don’t befriend the ‘Mrs’ & the children.

6. Don’t stalk his social media sites.

7. Be mindful of the places you go with him.

8. Choose gifts wisely.

9. Don’t show up at his place unless you’re invited.

10. Keep the relationship on the down low

Follow these simple tips and your relationship with a married man will be just fine until you’re upgraded to the post of ‘Mrs’ and someone else will take on your former position as ‘sweetheart’.
