I must commend Caribbean women who have decided to keep their natural/unprocessed hair as well as those who’ve transitioned from processed to natural. But, there’s a question which lingers on my mind. What’s the true meaning behind your decision to stay or revert to natural, is it that you truly want to embrace your ‘roots’ (cultural identity) or is it a case of you just following the crowd as sporting natural hairstyles now seems to be the in thing?
I’ve been asked on numerous occasions if I would go natural Yes of course but definitely not at this stage in my life; I’ve considered reverting to natural hair and cutting it really low when I get older. When I reminisce on the agony I endured as a child with long, thick natural hair I’m really not prepared to return any time soon. The pain of washing, drying and styling my natural hair every two weeks for twelve years was just unbearable. Relaxers were created for a reason and I was happy when my hair was introduced to it……what a relief! Now all I have to do is ensure that its maintained and of course combing is fairly easy; wrap, brush, pull in a ponytail & GO
I have nothing against those who’ve made a decision to transition to natural hair, its a personal choice and the bottom line is that we were all born with natural hair. However, when you make this decision based on the influence of others, therein lies your challenge; you’re really not embracing your ‘roots’….you’re really just following the crowd. So my advice to those who intend to go natural is this: before doing so, ensure you’re comfortable within yourself and ensure this is something you really want to do else the road to becoming natural will be a rough and miserable one.
I am Laydee Sharmz saying ‘stay true to yourself, embrace your roots & I’ll see you on the natural side in a couple of years’. Blessings!
