NCU Chronicles: SDA Institution Suspends Alleged Lesbian

I’m fully cognizant of the fact that NCU doesn’t condone homosexuality but in the 21st Century I do believe its downright foolish to suspend a student on the basis that he/she is gay. While the Bible condemns homosexuality, it encourages us to love our brothers and sisters regardless. Its time we Jamaicans do away with the foolishness and be tolerant of homosexuals. In light of the NCU suspension saga; the Gleaner posted:

The 21-year-old female student who was suspended from the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) because of her role in a cheerleading routine says a university committee questioned whether she had a boyfriend.

Sha-Shana James says the Seventh-day Adventist institution has banned her from all student activities for the two remaining years she is at the university.

During the March 4 cheerleading competition, the student played the role of a male cake topper as her team formed a human wedding cake.

However, she says the maneuver has been interpreted to be a proposal that involved the alleged kissing of another female’s hand.

A representative of NCU’s student government, Darren Barrett, who sat on the committee that met with the young woman, says the act went against the ethos of the university.

However, in an interview with The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre, Sha-Shana said she was discriminated against as she was the only one singled out and punished.

The student government representative says the other female student who was involved in the routine with Sha-Shana was called to a meeting but did not turn up.

He says other things were considered in suspending the student, including her appearance before the Citizenship Committee without her identification card and with a pierced tongue.

The mass communication student served a two-week suspension which ended on April 4.

Sha-Shana says she is considering leaving the institution.

When contacted, NCU vice-president, Dr Beverly Cameron, told our News Centre that she would not be able to address the matter until Thursday
