The Truth Is They’re No Saints

While I agree with the government & CDA’s stance that Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) shouldn’t have brought sex-education classes into children’s home without permission from relevant authorities, I do wish my fellow Jamaicans would desist from creating unnecessary drama surrounding this issue. While JFJ was wrong to carry out these classes without permission, I don’t think the organization had introduced anything new that the children didn’t already know.

As adults, we tend to hide certain things from our children but if only we knew that in most cases they are more knowledgeable than us. With the advent of technology; internet, cellphones, cable television & various forms of social media etc. children nowadays are more exposed than those who were born in the 90’s. If parents want to protect their kids from receiving certain information, they’d have to raise them in a bubble, free from outside influence (which of course isn’t possible).

It is a fact that young children know more about sex and its various forms than we as adults do. Parents need to be cognizant of the fact that sex is everywhere; in music, on TV, in books and on the very same smart phones and tablets that they give their children. In light of this, parents should talk to their children about the issue and not wait for someone else to do so.

Let’s cease from bashing organizations like the JFJ who saw the necessity for sex-education classes in children’s homes. I’m only upset by the manner in which they approached the problem. It is time Jamaicans realize that our ‘darlings’ aren’t saints anymore and that’s a fact!
