There’s Beauty & There’s ‘Miss Jamaica Beauty’

Social media went into a frenzy last Saturday night following the announcement of the Miss Jamaica World 2015 top 5 contestants. Why was there an uproar? Crowd favorite, Krystal Tomlinson didn’t secure a spot in the top 5 moreover the coveted MJW title and I can understand why. I have had the pleasure of meeting Krystal through debating spheres and while I know her to be an intelligent and beautiful soul, I’m not entirely surprised she didn’t get a spot in the top 5 even though she copped 3 sectional prizes. Why? There’s beauty and then there’s ‘MJW beauty’. Let’s face the reality, the organizers of these beauty pageants look for a certain calibre of girls – light skinned with long hair. Emphasis is actually placed on this feature as opposed to ‘Beauty With A Purpose’. Look at the girls who’ve won over the years, most posses the same characteristics. The chances of a dark-skinned, kinky hair girl emerging the winner is VERY rare.

Frankly, I believe that if an individual secures three sectional prizes especially one that is heavily weighted (Most Aware) she should automatically get a spot in the top 5. What exactly are these judges/organizers looking for? Don’t we want someone who is knowledgeable on all subject areas to represent our country? As stated earlier, I’ve met Krystal and any question posed, she has an answer (and not just an answer, but a sensible one). The woman is a perfect epitome of MJW’s tagline ‘Beauty With A Purpose’.

The organizers of these pageants need to understand that beauty extends beyond a fair complexion, skin tone, well-defined legs and hair length. If these are the features you’re looking for then do us Jamaicans a favor; eliminate girls who don’t make the cut before the finals. I wish Ms.Myrie all the best in China, I do hope she represents us well.

I have come to the realization that MJW is for a certain type of girls while JCDC’s Festival Queen is for another type (the type like Krystal, myself & others). JCDC capitalizes on beauty with a purpose (intelligence & talent over looks). The JCDC isn’t biased, they deal with integrity so you could resemble Gully Bop – if you deserve the crown, you’re going to get the crown.

I am Laydee Sharmz saying ‘ladies, stay pretty, elegant & be comfortable in your own skin…you’re more valuable than a silver crown’. ONE LOVE!
