Time for Change

While government members were confined to the air-conditioned walls of Gordon House discussing the country’s affairs, the Riverton landfill was once again blazing. Thick blankets of smoked that covered the Corporate area caused hundreds of persons to flock clinics seeking assistance for respiratory problems. Additionally, the important Grade Six Achievement Test had to be postponed. This latest inferno at the dump has not only brought into focus the ineptitude of those who manage the property, but is a clear manifestation of a greater problem that burdens Jamaica.

I believe that both political parties should be held accountable for Jamaica’s tragic state of affairs as both have had alternate turns at the head of governance but failed miserably. Sad to say that corruption plays a significant role in Jamaica’s political arena and the management of the city’s dump by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has solidified this clearly. Its about time for the landfill to be privatized as it is obvious that the Government can’t manage the property.

For too long we have allowed politicians to ruin our dignity, trick us & put our lives in danger while they live in luxury at our expense. We have alternated between ruling elites in both parties who seem to believe that they have a divine right to rule over the rest of us. They know what is best for us; yet, their vaunted knowledge has only resulted in grinding poverty for the majority of our people and diminished prospects for our young.

What Jamaica needs is a group of brilliant educated minds to advocate peacefully for sustained change in the way we do business. This group must devise a pragmatic plan of action, delegate roles and ensure that those who are elected carry their tasks instead of sitting around idly like these politicians we have now. There’s still hope for Jamaica, the mess can be cleaned but not until those currently in power make room for young, fresh minds to make the change.
