Until Jamaicans Change Their Attitudes, This Country Will Never Move Forward…..

It was Gandhi who quoted “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” but it seems this quote hasn’t resonated in the minds of many Jamaicans as they sit idly and blame politicians for the state our country is in. Jamaicans need to understand that politicians aren’t miracle workers, they can’t miraculously change the country. The onus is on the citizens to rid their minds of such a notion and change their nasty attitudes for the betterment of the country.

Now my dear readers, sit back and allow me to feed your minds with today’s shopping ordeal which will prove why Jamaica will have difficulty getting to the place it ought to be.

Its Friday, May 30 & I step into a popular apparel store to purchase some undergarments. After browsing for a couple minutes, I approached the counter where an attendant was busy packing the shelves. I kindly informed her that I needed some help. Five minutes passed and with her back still turned, I continued waiting. Time was going and I was definitely not amused that this woman didn’t have the courtesy to offer me some assistance.

Me: “Excuse me miss, may I get some help”

Worker: “My girl yuh nuh si mi a do sumn”

Me: I notice that but the customers come first

Work: Mel, come help da ooman yah

Mel: Mek yuh nuh help har?

Me: Obviously she’s busy and its your duty

And so the convo continued and I was getting even more upset. After waiting nearly 1/2hr for some assistance, it turned out that a display of distasteful customer service drove me out of the store faster than I came in.

Me: You know what? Since you all seem busy, I’ll spend my money elsewhere

Worker: Gweh, after mi nah beg yuh nutten

Me: Actually you are cau a my money feed yuh & yuh bag a pickney dem (I know I shouldn’t have belittled myself by stooping to her level but anger got the better of me).

And I walked straight through the door leaving the sexy undies & bras in the showcase. As I exited, I could hear the manager raging at them.

Me: But wat a gal renk een! *talks to self*

This is the problem we’re having in Jamaica; people don’t respect each other and neither do they respect the source of their income. Its difficult for Jamaica to move forward if we don’t rid ourselves of negativity. It starts with each of us.
