Warning: Whatever You Can’t Afford, Do Without…

As a child my grandmother usually told me that I shouldn’t ‘red eye’ or ‘badmind’ (Jamaican term for grudge) people for their things as I had no idea how they’ve acquired them. I’ve made a mental note of grandma’s warning and did everything in my power to follow accordingly.

While eavesdropping on a conversation earlier today, I was suddenly reminded of my grandmother’s stern warning. In light of this, I use this opportunity to share the devastating plight of a young woman and hope that it will serve as a wake-up call for those guilty of such offenses.

The story is that of a former schoolmate of mine who was privileged to get a job in an affluent home. Prior to the job, the woman now in question was on the lower end of society’s social ladder. Subsequent to securing the job, things suddenly changed and she now lived a rather lavish lifestyle which inevitably caused eyebrows to be raised. Then in the blink of an eye, things came tumbling down and embarrassment stared her in the face. It was later revealed that while collecting her stipend, she was snatching valuable items from her employer who later found out and cracked down on her. Upon arriving at their premises along with the police, the employer claimed several of her valuables that had gone missing.

Many of us have a tendency to be too ‘licky licky’ (refer to my recent post). We feel as if we must be in the latest trends and in order to keep up with the Jones’ we engage in illegal activities. It is not wise to grudge persons for what they own as we’re clueless as to how they acquired them. Nothing is more embarrassing than being caught red handed and then being laughed at.

Ladies and gents, in the words of Konshens ‘anything mi cyah afford mi jus do widout’ I’m encouraging you all to leave things you can’t afford and refrain from ‘ red eye’. I sympathize with the accused who is now behind bars awaiting trial.
