Why Are We So Overly Concerned About People’s Sexuality

The discussions surrounding the mass shooting at a gay club in Orlando and the move by SDA-based Andrews Hospital to dismiss unwed mothers has left me flabbergasted with only one question lingering “why is it that we are so overly concerned about people’s sexuality? It bothers me that with so many major issues happening in the World, many persons have opted to place vast interest in what happens behind the closed bedroom doors of others.

Mass Shooting:

As I listened to the news of Orlando’s mass shooting and heard the remarks passed by some persons, I was reminded that people are obsessed with other people’s sex lives. For a person to be killed because of who they choose to sleep with is pathetic. How can people be so heartless? Despite the fact that most of the victims were members of the gay community, no-one deserves to die in such manner. Members of the LGBT have a right to life like all of us. No, I’m not defending homosexuality but the right to life. So it bothers me when I hear ‘educated’ people being happy about the situation rather than condemning it. This exemplifies just how much we are our worst enemies. Why should you murder someone for having sex when they’ve never had sex with you?

Andrews Hospital Saga:

The cover story on this Sunday’s Gleaner left me feeling disgusted as I remembered how a particular teacher was forced to resign her job because she got pregnant out of wedlock and the Anglican-based institution prides itself on Christian ethics. I’m appalled that unwed mothers employed to Andrews Memorial Hospital are being required to enter the hospital through the back door. What kind of rubbish is this? The decision to punish employees for moral sins, rather than giving them a chance for redemption, is actually vague and has no biblical basis for any course of action. This is blatant discrimination against women!

Common-law unions are prevalent in Jamaica. In fact it is through such relationships that many persons came into the world and that isn’t about to end soon. Therefore, given that Andrews wants to uphold their moral standards, I have two (2) questions for their administration:

  1. What will be done about employees who are unwed fathers-to-be?

  2. Will Andrews only admit only married mothers to their maternity ward?

Every sin is a sin and we are all guilty of sin. However, people seem to have an obsession with sexual sins. Who are you to propose and execute judgment against persons who sleep with whoever they want? Why do you care so much about who people choose to have sex with? Why aren’t you equally as concerned about the other sins in someone’s life? Why aren’t you concerned about the acts of sin that you’ve committed in the past and even now?

He that is without sin, cast the first stone. No-one is perfect and we don’t live to be so before you start pointing fingers, ensure your hands are clean.
